Chicago Anti-Apartheid

Description

Apartheid was a segregation policy established by Dutch colonists in 1948 to deny black South Africans’ equal legal rights. In the 90s, the anti-apartheid movement became a global phenomenon. The city of Chicago was very active in anti-apartheid related efforts and responded with events like the Soweto Day Walkathon happened each year from 1987 until 1994 in response to the shooting of students in South Africa peacefully protesting the new order to have Afrikaan and English be the official languages spoken and written, and banning any local languages. Chicago showed its support in the anti-apartheid movement by beginning to speak poorly towards companies who were in favor of the oppressiveness that was the Apartheid government in South Africa.
