Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro in the visual representation of the joining of South Africa and Cuba

Subject

Chicago Anti-Apartheid

Description

In this image, Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro are contently sitting next to one another to represent the final union of South Africa and Cuba. In the lower corner, the globe with shaking hands popping out from South Africa and Cuba link together. The globe is also surrounded by the phrase, “Cuba & Southern Africa Solidarity Conference.” On the back of the shirt, the phrase “VENCEREMOS SOLIDARITY IS STRENGTH.” This phrase was in reference to the support of the union and steelworkers in South Africa and Cuba. This art is portrayed through the pressings of a T-Shirt. We can assume it was either printed onto the T-Shirt or pressed. This piece of art is very important in the Anti-Apartheid collection because of the significance this joining of countries had. “Its historical significance was ably expressed in a unique and moving piece of ANC heritage, linking Nelson Mandela to another leader of the armed struggle to end Apartheid,” as Juliet Highet says.
