Title

For a United, Non-Racial and Democratic South Africa

Subject

Chicago Anti-Apartheid

Description

The piece features a large figure in red overlooking the people of South Africa chained up from this Apartheid. Linked together to fight against it, this shows the people affected by this Apartheid coming together as one but breaking once it reaches close to the greater unidentifiable figure. This is symbolism by showing how the people within are fighting and united rather than being defeated and disassembled. Fighting for what you believe in as well as being united is the message the artist is getting across. Without unity, there isn't a way to overcome the force of breaking the chain links. “This image affirms women's life-giving potential while displaying ability to take it away... South Africa’s struggle against Apartheid.” (Kim Miller) The people of this country react and protect their land like the mothers protect their youth against anything in their way.
