Subject
A poster in reaction to the Kent State shooting from the Chicago Student Coalition
Description
Kent State, Ohio May 4, 1970 was one of the most memorable moments in America’s History. In 1970 of April 30th an announcement was made that the American Military would be invading Cambodia. That unsettled protesters on campus and around the nation. Which lead to what was supposed to be a peaceful protest, turned into a weekend of violence. The National Guard was called out to the school, to keep the frustrated crowd under control. On May 4, approximately 12:24 a National Guardsmen’s opened fire on a crowd of protestors. Leaving two dead, two dying, one paralyzed for life and eight others seriously wounded. “Like Ohio says, use any force that is necessary, even to the point of shooting” -Police Chief Roy Thompson.
The 2nd amendment states that the right to bear arms shall not be infringed upon. This is to protect the people from a tyrannical government. But when the National Guard opened fire on a group of Vietnam protesters, the students who were killed were unarmed. Two of the students who were murdered were protesting the slaughter of people overseas and were shot for it. The other 2 students were walking to class when they were hit by stray bullets. The poster shows a girl screaming in agony over the loss of her friend while protesting at Kent State against the Vietnam War. We have never been assaulted by our own armed forces again but what are we suppose to do when we are attacked by the people who are suppose to protect us? We aren’t being attacked by the military but far too many Americans face violence from police. In the article “Moms with Guns” Kim Miller talks about mothers in Kenya who fought a political battle against their government in order to “raise our sons to manhood, have our husbands with us, and lead normal women’s lives.” Similar to the mothers in Kenya, this poster calls for the killing to stop. The outrage and frustration over the lost of their loved ones is clearly shown in this image.
