“Get Up, Stand Up”

Chicago Anti-Apartheid, Latin American Human Rights Movement

On June 17, 1988, in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood crowds of many nationalities came together against injustice of human rights. The event “Get Up, Stand Up” was organized by the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador and Chicago Committee in Solidarity with Southern Africa. This event was hosted at Chicago’s Rivera Theater and included musical acts as well as music video broadcast. This was Chicago’s way of raising both money and awareness for the South African Anti-Apartheid movement as well as similar human rights violations in Latin America including Cuba’s dictatorship under Fidel Castro. In this print, we see many iconic figures for both South Africa and Latin America including Cesar Chavez, Nelson Mandela, Helen Rodriguez Trías and Bob Marley. South African and South American activist were also captured in the article “Moms with Guns” by Kim Miller with the involvement of mothers in both Anti-Apartheid and Argentina’s Dirty War. Similarly, these women would gather in central plaza areas of the city and walk in groups to spread awareness of their cause which was their missing children. They felt a lack of government concern which was also felt by members in the Anti-Aprathetide movement and the Latin American Human Rights movement such as those listed above. The t-shirt was made by screen printing the design onto the fabric.
