Anti-Kent State Poster

Subject

Kent State

Description

This poster was created with orange construction paper, an outline template and was silkscreened. This image itself has a lot of symbolic messages within itself. The American solider in front that is in combat has a soldier behind him and coming after the soldier. The Nazi symbol on the distorted face is known as the Americans “Nightmares” that they have about previous wars. This image was created off the anger and emotions that these students feel and it is strategically put together by showing the mistakes the United States have made over their beliefs. The lives of these students need to remembered, not forgotten in the past. “the victims... by their sacrifice should no longer be mourned but celebrated.” (Fitzgerald) They had made a sacrifice for speaking up and protesting for what they believe in and not backing down from it. Creating a large impact was the goal, and it was accomplished.

The artist compares Nazi Germany to the massacre that occurred May 4th 1970. It was created as a form of protest, during the five days after the Kent State Shooting. The poster is a sketch printed on orange paper depicting a Nazi soldier hovering over a American soldier aiming a gun at the audience making the viewer a part of the pieces statement. James young said “Amid not to console but to provoke not to remain fixed but to change ; not to be ignored by passerby but to demand interactions.” Which perfectly describes such a piece like this that demands attention and thought.
